Last year I read If You Only Knew by Jamie Ivey.
The book had me shaking my head page after page agreeing too many times with Ivey’s “What-was-I-thinking?” non-God-honoring moments.

Even though it’s been months since I’ve finished the book, I often revisit one question in particular that she poses in an early chapter.

Congregating around their backyard picnic table, the Ivey family asks everyone who convenes one question to get the conversation flowing:
Would you rather be rich or famous?
She goes on to explain that a person’s immediate response is typically the truest response to one’s character and reveals much about a person, too.

If you know me, sunshine, you likely know my immediate-don’t-even-need-to-think-about-it-response is, “FAMOUS!”

Now here’s something you should know–my reasons for fame have changed over the years.

While I still nurse the wounds of rejection and abandonment from my father and many men and relationships over the years, my reason for fame at present is no longer for the “look-at-me-I’m-awesome-and-need-your-validation-and-attention!”

I now seek to be known.
Not as pretty.
Not as an force of energy not to reckon with.
Not as ____ you can fill in the blank with whatever way you describe me, sunshine.

But I seek to be the girl who loves God and shines His light and conveys His love.

I want people to see Jesus in me.
And I want them to experience His love.
And to know the joy that comes from having a relationship with Him.
And I want them to be as healthy as possible so they can build others up along the way.

This is why I want to be famous.
This is why I do what I do.

What about you, sunshine?
What’s your response to Ivey’s question–would you rather be rich or famous?

Share with me your response.
