outsourcing won’t work

I hear it all of the time–

I don’t have time.
I don’t like to sweat.
I just really don’t enjoy it.
My favorite spin teacher left.
I start strong, but don’t have the motivation to keep going!

In summary: people find excuses not to exercise.

If only we could create an app, program, or device to outsource exercise, we would be billionaires!

Our society was already convenience-obsessed, but over the last few years with all of the delivery services, curbside pickups, and amazing tech innovation, we seem to have gotten even more focused on “done-for-you” systems and platforms, no matter the service or industry.

But like exercise, our faith is similar–we can’t outsource either.

Instead, we must own it.

We must be the one who:
Trusts.
Believes.
Surrenders.

Even if you were raised as a pastor’s kid, are a member of church leadership, or serve in the church nursery, you have to be the one to activate your faith and fuel it with daily practices and constant application. You cannot rely upon your relation, affiliation or association to develop your spiritual muscles!

In 1 Timothy 4:7-10, Eugene Peterson writes in The Message translation:

“Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please!
Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God
is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this.
Take it to heart. This is why we’ve thrown ourselves into this venture so totally.
We’re banking on the living God…”

So, friend, may this be a mid-week reminder for you to get to the gym–the one that will strengthen your body AND the one that will strengthen your spiritual muscles, too!
